WHO-24 v4.01
WHO-24 is an automated bulletin creation sub-system for
WILDCAT! BBS systems. The system is designed to scan the
DOOR.SYS file and the ACTIVITY.### files immediately after a
caller logs off the system. It will then update any bulletin
you specify so your users can view who called. As a spinoff
we are also including another bulletin, file generator called
WHOSPEED. WHOSPEED.EXE will also be run as part of the
POSTCALL.RUN routine and will use the file PREDOWN.JWH, a
small database containing who had the fastest download at
different protocalls. WHOSPEED.EXE will create a PREDOWN.BBS
screen that the viewer will see just prior to starting the
actual download. I also copy it to a bulletin so users may
call it for viewing at any time. You won't believe the
competition generated when users try to get the fastest CPS
rates.
Who-24 now supports log entries from EZ-Rom written by Mike
Robinson.
The system consists of four programs and two support
files, as follows:
WHOINIT.EXE - Starts a New Bulletin.
WHOCALL.EXE - Scans DOOR.SYS and Activity Log
WHOSPEED.EXE - Maintains a Download Database
WHOCFG.EXE - System Maintenance
CONFIG.JWH - Tells the programs where the files are
PREDOWN.JWH - Download Database
BULL18.BBS - Sample of Who Called Bulletin
BULL20.BBS - Sample of PREDOWN.BBS for Speed Function
All programs and files execpt for CONFIG.JWH and
WHOCFG.EXE should be placed in the main Wildcat directory, in
my installation that's C:\WildCat. CONFIG.JWH and WHOCFG.EXE
should accompany the POSTCALL.RUN batch file that is to be
placed each NODE#, for as many Nodes as you have.
WHOCFG.EXE - this program will keep track of where
the bulletins are to be placed and where information is to be
found. It is also where you may place your BBS's name to
appear on the bulletins, and predown displays.
1> BBS Name:The Midnight Cafe' BBS
Here is where you enter the name you want to appear in
the heading of the bulletin and predown display files.
2> Registration Number: ######-#
When you register the software you will receive a
registration number that will unlock the program and
remove the nasty (Un-Registered) messages.
3> Registration Date:01/01/01
This is just there to keep track of when you started
using the system. DO NOT REMOVE. The programs will
fail!
4> Bulletin Path & Name :C:\WildCat\BULL\BULL18.BBS
Here is where you tell the programs where to create the
bulletin for who called. You must type in the entire
path starting with the Drive, include the Path, and
finish with the file name you want to use. In my BBS I
use bulletin #18 for who called today.
5> Path to DOOR.SYS :C:\WildCat\WCWORK\NODE1\DOOR.SYS
As in the above explaination (#4) you will put the
Drive, Path, and file name telling the programs where to
find the DOOR.SYS file. If you are running multi nodes
you must put the CONFIG.JWH file in each node and then
edit the file so the node number is correct for that
particular node.
(IE Node 2 would be C:\WildCat\WCWORK\NODE2\DOOR.SYS)
6> Path to Activity file :C:\WildCat\ACTIVITY.1
Again for each active node you must tell the programs
where to find ACTIVITY.###. As above you must change
### to reflect what node you are going to examine.
7> Create Predown Display Y/N Y
This tells the programs whether you wish to create a
predown.bbs display, this is an option. Selecting it
will not speed up or slow the system down.
8> Path to Predown.JWH :C:\WildCat\PREDOWN.JWH
This line tells the programs where to find the Predown
data base used to create the PREDOWN.BBS display.
9> Path to Predown.BBS :C:\WildCat\DISP\PREDOWN.BBS
Finaly this will tell the computer where to create a
predown display. I also copy this file to a bulletin so
the user may view the stats without having to download
anything.
10-14> Exempt from Callers Log: Place up to five names here
that you would like excluded from the WHO 24 Bulletin. This
is where you will list yourself, or any Co-SysOp's so that
users won't see your own name over and over several times.
Type the name as it would appear in the ACTIVITY.### log in
all CAPITALS, Jim Henderson does not work - JIM HENDERSON
does. The program will also exclude Sysop logins....
POSTCALL.RUN
After putting all the files where they belong and editing the
CONFIG.JWH file to fit your system, you have to create a batch
file in the C:\WildCat\WCWORK\NODE# directory, and call it
POSTCALL.RUN, if you don't already have one. This will be
run right after a user logs off the system.
C:\WildCat\WHOCALL.EXE
* C:\WildCat\WHOSPEED.EXE
* COPY C:\WildCat\DISP\PREDOWN.BBS C:\WildCat\BULL\BULL#.BBS
* (Omit if you don't want a PREDOWN display)
MIDNIGHT.RUN
Is a batch file I use to do automatic system maintenance
every night around midnight. In it I have the following
line:
C:\WildCat\WHOINIT.EXE
This will clear out the old bulletin file and create a new
one with the current date. If you would like, as I do, I
have a bulletin to show users who called the previous day, so
I have two lines as follows:
COPY C:\WildCat\BULL\BULL12.BBS C:\WildCat\BULL\BULL13.BBS
C:\WildCat\WHOINIT.EXE
The copy line must come before the program call, as it has to
copy the previous days who called bulletin to another
bulletin prior to being re-initialized.
Be certain that a copy of all .JWH files exist in the same directory
as WHOINIT.EXE is called from. (I.E. if your batch file is as above
then CONFIG.JWH must also exist in the C:\WildCat directory.) Or, you
could run WHOINIT as the following:
C:\WildCat\WCWORK\NODE1\WHOINIT.EXE
This way WHOINIT.EXE will use the config file located in the NODE1
directory.
EZ-Rom Users: Registered users of EZ-Rom by Mike Robinson should
make use of the LOGLEADER configuration option, but change the "*"
to a "#". By doing this any activity log entry by EZ-Rom will be
prefixed with a # instead of an *. Who called looks for this to
be present when checking for downloads.
That is about that, execpt for one thing.
The programs included with this documentation are not
warranteed to do anything. Install it at your own RISK!
